In the northern part of Aarhus, “Bunkeren” rises as a striking narrative in concrete. The former Danish School of Media and Journalism is being transformed into an open and vibrant cultural and community center, where traces of the past form the foundation for new communities.

A building with history

Built in 1973 by Kjaer & Richter, The Bunker stands as an icon of Danish Brutalism — raw, distinctive, and uncompromising. The building holds a strong cultural-historical legacy as a setting for knowledge, debate, and democratic formation, and this very identity is central to its transformation. The project takes its point of departure in the existing structure and works to reinforce and carry forward its architectural qualities, ensuring that history is not merely preserved, but activated as an integral part of the building’s future life and function.

New spaces for community

Kulturhus Bunkeren is opened up and invites the city inside with new connections, programs, and places to stay. The building is developed into a gathering point in the new district of Margrethebjerg, where everyday life, culture, and communities can unfold side by side. Here, space is created for both individual activities and larger events, as well as for a diverse cultural and association life that supports encounters across groups and creates new opportunities for participation and a sense of belonging.

Transformation with care

The transformation is based on a holistic approach to sustainability, where environmental, social, and economic considerations are integrated. The building is future-proofed through improvements in energy consumption, indoor climate, and operations, while existing resources are preserved and supplemented with recycled and bio-based materials. Flexibility, robustness, and longevity are key principles, ensuring that the building can adapt to changing needs and provide a framework for an active and inclusive urban life — both now and in the future.
