From dead zones to a vibrant workplace

Artelia is an international consulting engineering company where collaboration, concentration, and knowledge sharing are central parts of everyday work. At the Aarhus office, there was a desire for the physical environment to better support different ways of working and a more activity-based approach to the workplace. Shared areas and transition zones were characterized by raw concrete, challenging acoustics, and a lack of variation in work settings, resulting in these spaces remaining largely unused in daily operations.

AART reimagined and activated the shared areas and transition zones, integrating them as a natural part of the overall office environment. Through clear zoning, biophilic elements, and an activity-based approach, the office is now designed to support focus, collaboration, and community.

The idea catalogue as a guide for transformation

A key tool in the process was AART’s idea catalogue, which brought together visions and solutions in a clear and practical format. This made it easier for Artelia to create coherence between the functions of the spaces, the desired employee behavior, and the specific design and interior solutions.

A central element in the transformation was the idea catalogue developed by AART. It served as a clear and practical recipe” that guided furniture selection, color schemes, and established a shared language for the organizational change. Many important decisions had already been made through the idea catalogue, which significantly streamlined the furniture procurement process.

A design that anchors behavior and vision

Today, the interior design supports both Artelia’s vision and employees’ everyday behavior. Plants, colors, and materials act as natural wayfinding elements, making it intuitive to use the spaces as intended. The activity-based way of working has been strengthened, and the sense of warmth and human connection has replaced the previous cold and raw concrete aesthetic. The impact has even extended beyond this location - several of the ideas from the catalogue have since been implemented at other sites across the organization.
