Winning proposal for the addition to Örebro University Hospital

09.12.2013 / “The light won.” This is the title of the jury’s report from the competition for the 24,000-m2 expansion of Örebro University Hospital, which includes operating rooms, outpatient clinics, same-day surgery services, wards and a new lobby and main entrance.
The title refers to the joint winning proposal submitted by AART architects and Sweco Architects. According to the jury, the proposal stands out for its excellent inflow of natural daylight, its great flexibility and its rich architectural expression.
“The proposal invests Örebro University Hospital with a new identity, creating a fresh profile in the eyes of the city [...] The overall concept totally accommodates the objectives of the competition programme: a good environment for both patients and staff, flexibility, constructability and a large measure of sustainable development."
"The building's division into several volumes provides bright environments, a well-defined reception area and logical flows in the building and the area around the hospital,” emphasise the jury in their report.
