Norway's most modern hospital opens the psychiatry department

03.06.2015 / In collaboration with Arkitema Architects we have designed the Hospital Østfold Kalnes, which is based on 3D technology and considered to be the most up-to-date hospital in Norway. This month sees the opening of the hospitals psychiatry department, and the first patients will be moved into this modern, healing environment.

To cure patients more quickly, to reduce hospitalisation time and to optimise the staff's working procedures, technology can be deployed. This is very much the case in the Hospital Østfold Kalnes, which has been entitled "Bright Prospects" and is located about 100 km southeast of Oslo. In our collaboration with Arkitema Architects, from the very outset we used an advanced, digital 3D model to plan the 85,000 m2 hospital.

"The 3D model has proven to be a superior tool for involving the hospital's staff. For example, even during the construction phase, the staff went on virtual guided tours in all the rooms of the hospital. This gave us a unique opportunity to optimise flow and working procedures to benefit both staff and patients," explains Anders Strange, partner at AART architects.

"It is no coincidence that in 2014 the project won the award for the world's best, open BIM model. The project is the first such extensive, complex digital project of its kind in Norway and Denmark. We discovered that our user processes took a quantum leap when the model was activated. Now an individual member of staff could see the specific room he or she would be working in, at the same time helping to influence the optimal design of the spatialities - smart architecture," adds Wilhelm Berner-Nielsen, partner at Arkitema Architects.
