AART architects wins competition for new science building

AART architects has won the competition for the expansion of Horsens State School. The expansion includes a new science building which provides synergy bewteen the science subjects.

In cooperation with Sjælsø and Niras, we have won the competition for the expansion of Horsens State School in Denmark. The expansion includes a 1,300 m2 science building in which classrooms for physics, chemistry, biology and geography are placed along a double high common room, which provides synergy between the science subjects.

"The proposal represents the most clear, architectural icon value. The proposal expresses a clear identity: This is where Science live! The proposal is conceptually clear in relation to both the inner and outer main idea. The proposal adds a new science building to Horsens State School, showing both independent format and contextual adaptation," the jury highlights.
The science building is designed as a compact building in which a double high common room and a sculptural staircase combine the building into a social and functional whole. In order to fulfil Horsens State School’s vision the building is organised in two floors by which the building provides the best possible synergy between the subjects and maximum outdoor space for the scenic garden.

The science building is based on a clear concept which preserves the symmetry of the existing building complex and interacts with the historic main building. In this way, the science building reflects the context which is enhanced by the curved carvings that open the building towards the main building and the scenic garden.
